1. New Features

   A few other ideas after our admin conference call last night.

   Admins is misleading...

   Perhaps have people register as Residents, service providers, or POD's.

   When a resident logs in they would be asked to submit their needs and location.

   What a service provider logs in for the first time be asked to provide the services they can provide quantities available of that service at any given time location and duration that the services would be available, and their location.

   When the POD logs in for the first time They would be asked via check box to select what they had available and quantities in general. They would also have the opportunity to update these quantities every time they login. There Could also be "other" fields where they could list things that were not in the general checkboxes. They might have the ability to populate these products from a CSV or excel doc, or another SQL db for mass quantities.

   When a resident logs in and requests a service or a product, a list of available. These or service providers would be generated based on availability, location, and proximity to the residence.

   This would alleviate the issue of searching through long lists of provided information for the service or product that is actually needed by the resident making it more customer focused instead of provider focused.

   I would leave the ability to view and search all categories as it exists now, but by putting the customer in the drivers seat, we can spend more time helping and less time administrating.

   Would love to talk more sometime. Wayne used to work for me at Apple, and we had some great conversation on what was needed and how we might make it better moving forward. Looking forward to talking with you about that sometime. Thanks!

5. Profile for All Hands and Hearts - Smart Response

   Hi Recovers team,

   I represent a non-profit disaster relief/recovery organization that has programs in many communities - All Hands and Hearts. We seem to have had someone from our organization create a profile for us years ago, but whoever did it is no longer with the organization.    If a person just wants to SEE up to date requirements, they should not have to give such personal information as their phone number, etc. The WISH LIST should be available with only a click or two.

8. Offline Mode, printable needs/case mgt

   If there was an offline mode available (I'm thinking like an app/program) it would be very useful for initial disasters where there are generators but no phone/cell/internet yet. We were in this situation for a day, and if it had been longer it would have been tremendously limiting for using this site. Once internet is restored, the local info could be uploaded to the website. This has its own challenges of db mgt, but it would be useful if addressed.
   Also, as we interface with a relief organization who uses paper to track cases, the ability to print the needs cases for them would be wonderful. Being able to select to print all cases, only active, or closed would grease the skids for this process.
   Thanks for this great toolset!

9. I live in England where we don't have much going wrong generally but what to dso if the rainy day comes my way?

   I look at weather charts a lot and have noticed a few oddities that appear in them when a disaster is imminent. (That region of the Rockies north of Seattle needs watching for instance.)

   So what do I do if I see something "interesting"?

10. Community Resources Inventory.

    I need to develop a resource inventory for pre-disaster planning. Can recovers help? We need to know what heavy equipment is available and how to dispatch it, what restaurants can cook with gas when the power fails, who our HAMs are etc. This info needs to be available to the ICS.

11. I heard Caitlia on NPR and was very impressed

    Here in Ontario in 1998 we had the Ice storm that took down over 8800 hydro poles, + 7 inches of ice on roofs and roads impassable. Power in some cases was not restored for 28 or more days.

    Our community was well organized but still this was a storm of a lifetime, we used cell phones analog and CB radio's.

    But I agree on the need for a structure in case of emergency, more so today with things like Isis at our door.

    Anyway I just wanted to say you did a good thing...

    PS. I took my first responder course in 1980 and was a member of a React emergency group. This group was paramount in 1972 when a major storm came across the great lakes. We had 80 mph wind and tremendous amount of snow and things did not back to normal for over a month.

    Some of the needs could be fulfilled through Amazon. I would think supplying a way for outside the community would yield even further results. I cannot give much, but would be willing to buy some things on Amazon to send.

15. UNL: Recovers + Open Source Design

    Greetings. My name is Brian Kelly and I am an architect and professor of architecture at the University of Nebraska. I am reaching out to your group after seeing the TED talk from Caitria and Morgan.

    Currently I am doing research into open source design and open access to design resources in situations where professional design services are not available or not appropriate due to issues of time, culture, availability or other such limitations which render it difficult. During the Fall semester of 2016, I will be coordinating an upper level interdisciplinary design studio here at UNL which will focus on open source design as it relates to disaster recovery.

    There is currently a global movement for open design which makes knowledge available to the masses. Open-source design, at its core, endeavors to fuel collaborative innovation through the open access to content which is thoughtfully considered and serves as a competent base to build upon. Most often seen in software development, open-source design has also been translated to physical objects from furniture to built structures.

    Open access materials integrate embedded knowledge traits where intelligence is intrinsic to their use (ie. organizational frameworks, assembly, etc.) and can be activated without specific training or experience. The designer is able to establish smart design parameters anticipating a range of options which might be desirable to the end user. As well, the designer’s knowledge of limits do not allow for variations which would ‘break’ or sacrifice the integrity of the system. With embedded knowledge, the guidance of an experienced designer is with the novice as they work within the immediate context searching for the most appropriate solution.

    Post-Renaissance design disciplines of the built environment are predicated on the Albertian model where conception and representation of built form occur initially, followed separately by construction of the artifact as shown in the representations without alteration. Referred to in print media terms as bon à tirer (ready for press), this relationship seeks to assure control of the content by the author, and makes its manifestation a machinic act of following directions. This model is being challenged in the 21st century as the line between projecting and constructing is becoming increasingly less distinguishable. Enabled partly by a democratization of fabrication, the maker and end user are becoming authors in the process to the extent that the professional designer is sometimes perceived as unnecessary.

    So you might be asking - why am I reaching out to Recovers.org? I would like to team with Recovers as a partner in this design studio. We live in a State which is annually affected by floods and tornadoes, and we are also continually hearing about the damage they are able to inflict... or at least we hear about it for a short period of time after the impact. Your comments about need for quick and intelligent action after disaster were well taken, but even more poignant was the comment about how well the community is able to recover after the news crews have left town. I would like to explore with the students how ‘Recovery in a Box’ could be manifest in a new interpretation where open source design could allow for the rapid deployment of temporary structures making both short and long term impacts establishing a more empathetic bridge between the pre-disaster condition to a revised state of existence. This collaborative design studio will see participation from the disciplines of architecture, interior design, landscape architecture, and computer science. As an licensed architect, i want to clarify that the intent is not to subvert the role of the professional designer, but rather to provide smart design for conditions which do not allow for the traditional design/build process due to time, location, culture, or availability of professional services. (ie. disaster or humanitarian assistance).

    I am enthusiastic about the potential of these bright students taking on such a meaningful challenge with your group. I look forward to hearing back from you at your earliest convenience and discussing the opportunity to, at some level, take on this exciting endeavor with us!

We are currently drafting a Spontaneous Volunteer Management Plan Template to be used throughout the region. We have been asked to provide recommendations for online and software based volunteer management systems to aid in overall volunteer management, long term recovery, and donation management. I have a few questions about your system.

    1. Allow municipalities/volunteer organizations to track and manage volunteers?

18. I chose "choose" to send attached file for my note; no success.

    Your site copied out the names (but grayed out) of the 3-page and then of the 1-page attachments, I tried to send, and then it told me I hadn't chosen the file(s) yet.     Hi! I'm not sure if you guys remember but over a year ago, Chris commented on my page in Making All Voices Count's Global Innovation Competition 2015. We ended up getting gold, and after almost a year, we were able to (soft) launch Balangay in the most disaster prone area in the Philippines- Albay. Similarly, my company won a bid to start a "Smart City Transformation Project" in Legazpi City Albay. One of the core components of the project is Disaster Preparedness, Response and Recovery.

    By any chance, are you still interested to collaborate, or maybe do a partnership?
